King Alfred of Wessex, also known as Alfred the Great, defended the Kingdom of Wessex from 871 to 899 against invaders like the Great Viking Army under Ivar the Boneless. Alfred was a learned man for his day and something of a Renaissance man long before there was a Renaissance. He worked to improve the lives of his people and also was the first to style himself as the King of the Anglo-Saxons. Actual stamped image is shown.
